On July 9th last year, we touched down at the airport (after too many hours of flying (Hong Kong- Tokyo-Atlanta) and too few hours of sleep), made our way through customs and immigration, and then Emily met her brothers and grandparents for the first time in person (vs. via Skype). She also became a U.S. Citizen that day. A special day for all of us! We LOVED being in China, but were very happy to come home and we were so happy be with our boys again.
I've never "published" most of the pictures from that day (how has a YEAR gone by and I still haven't done this??!!). But, I love these pictures. Justin and I look overtired, greasy, overwhelmed, and bedraggled, but also joyful. I love how well the photographer (Red Threads - Kirsten Lee) captured the emotions of these first moments for our just-grown-bigger family. You can see the full range of what everybody was feeling that afternoon: the boys' impatience and boredom as they waited for us to finally come out of customs, some worry on my Dad's face as we didn't emerge quite as quickly as he thought we might, total elation from the boys when they first saw us appear, tears in our eyes when we saw the boys again, exhaustion and joy as we all grabbed each other for hugs, wonder and curiosity in Emily's eyes and on her face as she took in all of the new people and voices and circumstances, the boys' giddiness when they first tried to hold their new sister, and finally, contentment - as we posed together as a family of five and got ready to start our "new" life. I'm glad we spent a little more money (what's a little more after two weeks in China!?) and had these pictures taken. We will always treasure these memories of Emily's homecoming.
